Obituary

Mary Louis Hollis Lewis is the daughter of the late Doman and Clara Hollis.  She was born in Cordele, Georgia on October 6, 1934.  She was the youngest of two children.  She is preceded in death by her brother Dorman Hollis Jr. and her parents.  On January 5th, 2021, the Lord, who loved her more, called her home.

Mary Lewis attended the public schools of Crisp county, Georgia.  She graduated from Fort Valley state University in 1957. she recieved her B.S. Degree in Home Economics Education.  Also, in May 1957,  She married the love of her life Charle Lewis, who was enlisted in the U.S. Army.  He was a wonderful husband, father and lifelong friend.

She taught school in both Georgia and North Carolina (Raeford).  Mary Lewis believed in furthering her education and took classes at ECU, UNC, UNC-G, NCSU, FSU and FTCC, to enhance her skills.  Mary Lewis was very much loved by the generations she touched in over 27 years as director of the Mount Sinai Day Care Center.

As a dedicated community leader, she received many honors and accolades, none more endearing than being named "Mother of the Year" in 1997/1998 by the Fayetteville branch of the NAACP.  She was featured in the Fayetteville News and Observer and recognized Statewide.   She was politically active for many years working  to ensure voter education to include working at the voter registration polls.  She was also a member of the NC Psychology Board, appointed by then Governor Martin.  She was an esteemed member of the Mount Sinai Church Mothers Board.  Beyond being a fanastic baker, everyone who ate at the Mount Sinai Family Life Center continuously came back faithfully every Sunday for a good home-cooked meal.  Her caring spirit left an indelible mark on your soul.  Mary Lewis will not soon be forgotten.

Mary and Charles Lewis were married for 62 years and blessed to know the love of the Lord and serve him fiercely as dedicated members of Mt. Sinai Baptist Church for decades.  They were fortunate to have five daughters - Marchanda Lewis, Michele Lewis, Charlette Lewis, Patricia Huff, and Crystal Brown (Theodore N. Brown II).  Mary was gifted with four grandchildren - Theodore "TJ" Brown III, Brianna Lewis, Ejessica Brown, and Marabbi Brown.  There are two great-grand-children as well, Zelaya and Chase Brown.
